MISSED LESSONS
Our missed lesson policy is designed to give you many options to make up lessons, without being penalised. I understand that parents sometimes will miss lessons, but the holiday option gives you flexibility. It obviously costs me to provide for an instructor in the holidays, but parents often book some of the $13 lessons, which helps me break even. Missed lessons are preferably made up during the Holiday program, but can be made up during the Term or a percentage rebated from the Term’s fees.
If you cannot make up the lessons for which you have pre-paid, you can deduct the following amounts from next term. With one child, credit $6.00 per lesson. With two children enrolled, credit $5.50 per child. With 3 children, credit $4.50 per child. This means that I retain $9 per child to pay my costs.
Web Site
I am continually improving my Web site at www.saswimschools.com Applications and Newsletters are available on this site. I would like you to email me any photos of your children, that you have taken at the pool, for inclusion in the photo file.
HOW PARENTS CAN HELP
• Make sure children have their own goggles, correctly fitted
• Do not interfere during classes, unless there is a safety issue
• Don’t over-react every time your child achieves a new skill
• Make sure that long hair is tied back
• Ensure that children are properly dressed for swimming
• Try and keep young children under control when not having a lesson, but we understand.
• Ensure infants that are not toilet trained are wearing bathers that prevent soiling in the water.
PARTY SWIM – Only $60.
Invite up to 12 children (negotiable) for a swim as part of your child’s birthday celebrations. The pool is available Saturdays 11 – 12 or Sundays 11.30 – 12.30. Tire them out, a delivered pizza or pasties etc, a cake, a few nibblies and drinks under the veranda for as long as you wish. Guard on duty for the hour in the pool and all equipment is available. This has become a very popular party option due to the ease of security and supervision. Plenty of shelter; a good Winter party option.
PRE-KINDY - INTRODUCTION TO SWIMMING
I conduct lessons for 3yr – 4 yr old children on Friday between 9.30 and 11.00. Children who may be intimidated by swimming lessons can attend the morning program for 30 mins for $13, pay as you go.
SUNDAY CLASSES - INFANTS 8 MTHS – 3 YEARS
Julie has provided parent and infant classes on Sunday Morning for children 8 months to 3 years of age. They are very popular, due to Julie’s excellent program which meets many parents desire to involve their young children in water programs. I always remind parents that these programs do not make children safer, nor are they important in relation to learning to swim. These programs, however, provide a new experience for infants and help develop positive attitudes. These classes are $13 per lesson, pay as you go and require a parent or competent person in the water with the child. Infant classes are at 8.25 – 8.55 and 10.10 – 10.40. Classes for 3 – 4 year old children and older children are also available on Sunday.
WINTER SWIMMING
It always surprises me that parents think that winter swimming is not a good option. It may be that you wish your children to have a break because of other recreation activities, but the weather conditions, outside the confines of the pool, should not be an issue. Parents are prepared to let their children practice and play sports outside in the mud and rain and do their dancing in cold gyms and other venues, but do not consider that the pool provides exactly the same air(27˚) and water temperatures (32.4˚) in summer and winter. When the children are dried off and put on their winter clothes, what is the difference?
TEACHER’S ATTITUDE
I expect teachers to keep children under control, which may mean talking tough, but the children should not be afraid of them. It is not our place to make them ‘good children’ however we must be strong enough to keep the class safe. If teachers are concerned about the ‘safety’ of a child, because they are not listening or annoying other children, then the parent will be told that it is unsafe for the child in that class and we would try and find a smaller class, which we may not be able to do. Remember that it is rarely the child’s fault if they are regularly behaving badly, it may be our fault, the parents, or a psychological disorder. Teachers try not to get angry with the children, as hard as this may be but they should never handle a child in anger.
CHANGE ROOMS
Change rooms at swimming pools can cause concern for some parents. Questions are raised such as, “At what age should boys stop using the girls change room” and “can a mother go into the boys change room to check on them”. In an emergency, always do what you think and I will support you. I think that boys should use the male change room at about 8 years. Mums ‘can nip in and out’ of boys change rooms if no adults are present. If there is a particular concern, discuss it with the teacher in charge and we will work out something for you. I am happy for young children to change in the pool area. People have different perspectives on this issue and we need to err on the conservative side.
We recognise that learning to swim with confidence and correct style will take time, but once obtained, will remain forever.
