MISSED LESSONS
Our missed lesson policy is designed to give you many options to make up lessons, without being penalised. I understand that parents sometimes will miss lessons, but the holiday option gives you flexibility. These school holidays the pool is closed to enable them to undetake general pool maintenance. Missed lessons are preferably made up during the Holiday program, but can be made up during the Term or a percentage rebated from the Term’s fees.
If you cannot make up the lessons for which you have pre-paid, you can deduct the following amounts from next term. With one child, credit $6.00 per lesson. With two children enrolled, credit $5.50 per child. With 3 children, credit $4.50 per child. This means that I retain $9 per child to pay my costs.
WEB SITE
I am continually improving my Web site at www.saswimschools.com Applications and Newsletters are available on this site. I would like you to email me any photos of your children, that you have taken at the pool, for inclusion in the photo file.
CHANGE ROOMS
Change rooms at swimming pools can cause concern for some parents. Questions are raised such as, “At what age should boys stop using the girls change room” and “can a mother go into the boys change room to check on them”. In an emergency, always do what you think and I will support you. I think that boys should use the male change room at about 8 years. Mums ‘can nip in and out’ of boys change rooms if no adults are present. If there is a particular concern, discuss it with the teacher in charge and we will work out something for you. I am happy for young children to change in the pool area. People have different perspectives on this issue and we need to err on the conservative side.
SHALLOW WATER POLICY.
Use of the shallow water area is for children too young to commence the program, or for children waiting for a sibling having a lesson. This policy is necessary to properly supervision the area.
1. Children under 24 months can only use the area if they are constantly supervised by a competent person. Young children must wear suitable ‘nappy’ bathers.
2. Children finishing lessons must leave the water immediately and not continue playing in the shallow area, unless they are waiting for a sibling who is attending the next class.
3. Parents with children wishing to use the shallow area will be asked to remove the children from the water, if the teacher considers the situation unsafe or disruptive.
HOW PARENTS CAN HELP
• Make sure children have their own goggles, correctly fitted
• Do not interfere during classes, unless there is a safety issue
• Don’t over-react every time your child achieves a new skill
• Make sure that long hair is tied back
• Ensure that children are properly dressed for swimming
• Try and keep young children under control when not having a lesson, but we understand.
• Ensure infants that are not toilet trained are wearing bathers that prevent soiling in the water.
TEACHING PHILOSOPHY
Our philosophy on teaching is different from most swim schools. We accept the following:
• Get the technique right before doing distance training
• Perfect practice makes perfect, practice make permanent
• Never let the content become more important than the attitudes being developed in children
• The development of a sound, healthy self esteem in the student, is paramount
• We do not use Certificates as they create more problems than they solve
WHICH TEACHER SUITS MY CHILD?
Different children prefer different teachers, as do different parents. Our program allows you to pick and choose classes as much as you like, as long as there is a space for your child. Remember that children cannot pick their sport coach, their school teacher, their class or classmates or their parents, therefore you should feel that any change should be in the best interests of your child. Some children don’t like to be told what to do, or to be disciplined, which may be just what they need. Usually you don’t get to watch while your child is being taught; observe carefully and decide whether the teacher or child needs support in any conflict. I do agree that sometimes it is a case of taking the easy option. We have all been down that track!
WINTER SWIMMING
It always surprises me that parents think that winter swimming is not a good option. It may be that you wish your children to have a break because of other recreation activities, but the weather conditions, outside the confines of the pool, should not be an issue. Parents are prepared to let their children practice and play sports outside in the mud and rain and do their dancing in cold gyms and other venues, but do not consider that the pool provides exactly the same air and water temperatures in summer and winter. When the children are dried off and put on their winter clothes, what is the difference?
My recommendation to parents is that they continue to swim during winter and if they wish, have a break in summer. I know that I will not convince many doubters, but the lower class numbers during winter are a definite bonus.
Colds and runny noses should not stop children from doing sport, including swimming, as exercise will not harm them, but if they have a fever then they should rest. The chlorine levels and high turnover rate of the pool ensures that infections will not be transferred through the water to other children.
We recognise that learning to swim with confidence and correct style will take time,
but once obtained, will remain forever.
